Om Rebecca Wall

Rebecca Wall is a senior lecturer at the School of Medical Sciences, having joined in July 2014 as a research associate. She earned a Master’s Degree in Chemistry from the University of Kalmar, Sweden, in 2003 and a PhD in Microbiology from University College Cork, Ireland, in 2008. Following her PhD, she worked for 4 years (2009-2013) as a postdoctoral scientist in APC Microbiome Ireland, where her research primarily focused on the impact of metabolically active bacterial strains on host fatty acid metabolism and physiology. 

Rebecca’s current research projects aims to explore how diet, particularly dietary fibers, modulates the microbiota and influences host health and disease. Her research also focuses on butyrate, a microbial metabolite produced from the bacterial fermentation of undigested dietary fibers in the large intestine. Reduced levels of butyrate and butyrate-producing bacteria have been linked to colonic diseases such as IBD and IBS, suggesting butyrate’s critical role in disease resistance. Rebeccas research aims to understand more about butyrates mode of action in the human colon and its importance for colonic health. 

Rebecca is the principal investigator for several successful research grant applications, including those from The Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet och Formas) and The European Foundation for the Study of Diabetes. She has established national and international collaborations, including strong partnerships with industry. 

 
At the department, Rebecca contributes to the Medical Programme’s education. Rebecca is co-responsible for coordinating the theme area ”nutrition, metabolism and elimination” (NME) during semesters 1, 2, 5 and 8 and she is course coordinator/examiner for the Independent Project (15 higher education credits) during semester 6.
