Fredrik Karlsson är professor i informatik vid Örebro universitet och medlem av forskningsmiljön Centre for Empirical Research on Information Systems (CERIS).
Forskning
Hans forskning handlar främst om ledning och styrning av informationssäkerhet och systemutveckling.
Fredrik Karlsson arbetar med att skapa goda förutsättningar för anställda att bidra till sina organisationers informationssäkerhet. En viktig utgångspunkt i detta arbete är att betrakta anställda som en resurs och att anställda aktivt tar initiativ till att bidra till informationssäkerhet. I ett flertal projekt har han studerat hur anställda måste prioritera mellan sina huvudarbetsuppgifter och informationssäkerhet, på grund av att olika delar av ledningen arbetar mot olika, och ibland konflikterande, mål. Fredrik Karlsson har utvecklat metoder och IT-system för att identifiera sådana situationer, där resultaten kan användas för att förbättra organisationens sätt att leda sina anställda.
Fredrik Karlsson forskar också om hur man kan förbättra informationssäkerhetsriktlinjer och göra dem tydligare och mer lättillgängliga för anställda. Exempelvis har han drivit projekt om hur informationssäkerhetsriktlinjer kan anpassas till anställdas roller och arbetsuppgifter, och hur detta kan göras möjligt genom specialdesignad mjukvara. Han bedriver forskning om hur Artificiell Intelligens, och mer specifikt stora språkmodeller, kan användas för att förbättra innehållet i informationssäkerhetsriktlinjer. Exempelvis hur instruktioner till anställda kan göras tydligare. Han har även lett ett flertal forskningsprojekt inom informationssäkerhetskultur.
I det andra forskningsområdet, systemutveckling, arbetar Fredrik Karlsson med att bidra till hur organisationer effektivt kan strukturera sitt arbete med att utveckla IT-lösningar. Det innebär att han forskar om användning och anpassning av arbetssätt inom systemutveckling. Han har bland annat drivit ett forskningsprojekt om cargo cult-beteenden när systemutvecklingsteams använder agila praktiker. Sådana beteenden innebär att man kopierar andras handlingar, dvs sätt att arbeta, utan att förstå de bakomliggande målen. Resultatet blir ytligt genomförda handlingar, där systemutvecklingsteamen inte når den fulla potentialen av de agila praktikerna. Han är för närvarande intresserad av hur Artificiell Intelligens påverkar de agila praktiker som organisationer använder samt hur stora språkmodeller kan användas när systemutvecklingsteams arbetar med kravhantering.
Fredrik Karlsson är anlitad som granskare och som föreläsare vid internationella vetenskapliga konferenser, där han också jobbat med att anordna sådana konferenser både vid Örebro universitet och i andra länder. Han har också haft flertalet editoruppdrag för internationella vetenskapliga tidskrifter. Fredrik Karlsson har tidigare varit forskningsledare för CERIS.
Undervisning
Fredrik Karlsson är utsedd till excellent lärare vid Örebro universitet. Han undervisar på kandidat-, master- och doktorandnivå. Fredrik Karlsson ledde utvecklingsarbetet med informatikämnets masterprogram, Ledning och styrning av informationssäkerhet, som utvecklades med tillsammans med näringslivet och offentlig förvaltning, med finansiering från KK-stiftelsen. Han har också drivit uppdragsutbildningskurser inom ledning och styrning av informationssäkerhet.
