Om Katarina Persson
Katarina Persson is a professor in biomedicine with focus on pharmacology at the School of Medical Science at Örebro University. She received her PhD in experimental clinical pharmacology at Lund University and has spent two years as a research fellow at University of Virginia in Charlottesville, USA. In year 2002, Katarina moved to Linnaeus University in Kalmar for a position as senior lecturer at the Pharmacy programme. In 2008, Katarina got a position as professor at Örebro University and she has to a large extent been engaged in implementation of the Medical programme.
Research
Katarina Persson is active in the research environment Inflammatory Responses and Infection Susceptibility Centre (iRiSC) and the research profile X-HiDE (Exploring Inflammation in Health and Disease) at Örebro university. Her main research interest is in the field of bacteria-host interactions during urinary tract infection. The focus of the research is to understand how activation of the host inflammatory response regulates bacterial colonization of the urinary tract. The increasing prevalence of antibiotic-resistant uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC) together with the recognition of UPEC as intracellular bacteria challenge our current drug treatment regimens of urinary tract infections. Many women suffer from recurrent urinary tract infections and one hypothesis is that uropatogenic bacteria are protected within intracellular niches in the urinary bladder. Intracellular bacteria that are protected from the host inflammatory response and antibiotic treatment may later exit the host cells and re-infect the urinary tract which enhances the risk of recurrent urinary tract infections. Katarina is also involved in a pharmacoepidemiologic research project, in collaboration with Uppsala University, on the impact of SARS-Cov-2 on the drug utilization and health care in Sweden.
Teaching
Katarina Persson coordinates the education in pharmacology at the Medical programme. She mainly teaches basic pharmacology during the first three years of the curriculum including lectures in pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular and respiratory pharmacology. She also give lectures at the international Master’s programme in Experimental Medicine. Katarina is responsible for the biomedical area of knowledge (kunskapsområdesansvarig biomedicin) at the Medical programme.
