In 18th century Sweden everyone, women and men, young and old, where expected to be able to read the Bible and possess knowledge in the Catechism. According to many teaching instructions the parishioners should use the Swedish language. At the same time there where several minority languages in Sweden. Where these people forced to use the Swedish tongue as the instructions tells us? Can we question the instructions? This project will study which languages were used in popular education.
