A shopping cart in the jungle.

In this research project, we want to evaluate if and how Supermarket safari works. Supermarket safari is an activity where a participant receives information about food and health in a food shop. We explain how to recognise healthy foods and what to look out for to stay within budget.

Supermarket safari consists of two sessions, with some tasks that a participant does at home (some written tasks and cooking a new recipe). Supermarket safari has been developed by Marleen Lentjes (nutritional epidemiologist) and is delivered by a nutrition expert from RF-SISU. The evaluation is organised by Örebro University and is done with two questionnaires. One questionnaire is filled in by a participant before Supermarket safari starts and one after the last session. The questionnaires contain questions about the participants' background, their food knowledge and how they choose food in the supermarket.

Participants live in one of the municipalities in the northern part of the county which has a health initiative directed towards children and their carers around food and movement (‘Mat & Rörelse Glädje’). Supermarket safari is given as part of this project. It is based on the current Swedish dietary guidelines. We want to know if this resource, with a more practical and interactive approach, helps with making better food choices in the supermarket.
