About Simon Athlin

Simon Athlin is an Associate Professor of medicine with a combined position as Senior Lecturer at the School of Medical Sciences, Örebro University and as Senior Consultant at the Department of Infectious Diseases, Örebro University Hospital. He is currently unit manager at the School of Medical Sciences.

He leads the research group Acute respiratory tract infections in collaboration with researchers from other Swedish and international institutions, which includes supervision of several PhD students. The main research areas are treatment of pneumonia and  immune response to severe pneumococcal pneumonia, influenza and pneumococcal vaccination. Simon also leads the research group SHAPE (Sustainable reduction of Household Air Pollution in rural Ethiopia), which is a collaboration between researchers from Örebro University, Addis Ababa University, Chalmers University of Technology, Linnaeus University and University of Gothenburg. The SHAPE project aims at reducing exposure to air pollution from indoor cooking and improve health in families in rural Ethiopia.

As responsible for teaching in infectious diseases and global health for students at the Medical School, Simon has been clinical theme leader (Theme Defense) until recently. Nationally, he has been board member of the Infectious Disease Society of Sweden (IDSS) and chairman of IDSS's expert group on pneumonia for many years. Based on register data from the IDSS's National Quality register of Pneumonia, his research covers diagnostics, aetiology and treatment in community-acquired pneumonia in Sweden. At Örebro University, he is board member of the research environment iRiSC (Inflammatory Response and Infection Susceptibility Centre) and coordinator of WP3 in the research project X-HiDE (Exploring Inflammation in Health and Disease).
