About Alexandra Ullsten
Alexandra Ullsten, PhD in Musicology/Music Therapy, works as a music and art therapist at the Central Hospital in Karlstad, Region Värmland, Sweden. In 2010, Alexandra pioneered the implementation of neonatal music therapy in Swedish healthcare. The Central Hospital/Karlstad NICU, became the first hospital in the Nordic countries to offer a family-centred music therapy program for hospitalised infants and their parents. Alexandra’s research area concerns family-centred music therapy during painful procedures in neonatal care focusing on parent-driven non-pharmacological pain management such as parental infant-directed singing.
Alexandra is a member of the international research networks Pain in Early Life (PEARL) and Pain in Child Health (PICH), and a invited member of the Scientific Advisory Committee, for the international research project LongSTEP “Longitudinal Study of music Therapy’s Effectiveness on Premature infants and their parents”, Bergen University/NORCE, Norway. She is an invited peer reviewer for Acta Paediatrica, Nordic Journal of Music Therapy, Paediatric & Neonatal Pain, Medicines, Health Psychology Report.
