Selecting your search terms carefully is crucial.
Search terms
Consider what words best describe the topic. Try using the databases' selected subject terms. Are there alternative spellings? Are there broader terms?
Truncation
Search using word stems: librar* (for all variants of the word , e.g. library, librarian and librarianship).
Wildcard
The question mark (?) often matches any one character and can be used to find "Olsen" or "Olson" by searching for "Ols?n".
Boolean logic
In many databases, you can choose how you want to combine your search terms by using Boolean logic. By selecting OR your search expands. You can get multiple references by combining eg synonyms. The search result will then contain any of the words.
