In English:
In the Western world, the love affair with meat remains relatively unshaken. Despite a surge in awareness about the meat industry's darker side – ranging from animal cruelty and health risks to its significant environmental footprint – meat consumption rates have barely budged in recent years. For most, the sizzle of a steak still outweighs the call for change.
The discourse of "happy meat" explored in this new book offers a powerful case for understanding how moral boundaries and notions of the "good eater" are constructed through negotiations of values, identity, and status.
Josée Johnston is a professor of sociology at the University of Toronto and a leading food sociologist. Her work covers a range of topics including foodie culture, sociology of taste, gender and class in food cultures, environmental sociology.
During this seminar, Professor Josée Johnston will present her latest book called Happy Meat. The book explores North Americans relationship to eating meat with innovative empirical and theoretical findings. Her presentation will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Jonatan Leer, professor at Örebro University's School of Hospitality, Culinary Arts and Meal Science.
