Om Shashank Gupta

As a researcher at Örebro University, I work on the EDC-MASLD project, delving into how endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) impact metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) from early vulnerability to advanced stages. With a diverse team spanning various disciplines, we're conducting multi-omics studies to understand EDCs' effects on the internal exposome and liver damage in MASLD. Our goal is to unveil mechanisms driving MASLD progression, aiding in targeted interventions and prevention strategies.

Personal Journey

I received my Master of Science in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics from SRM University, Chennai, India in 2013. Since then, I've pursued research at various institutions in India and Europe. During my time at CSIR - Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology in New Delhi, India (2014-2017), I focused on studying the gut bacteria of healthy individuals, which laid a strong foundation for my future research.

Later, I moved to Europe and completed my Ph.D. at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark (2017-2021). There, I studied how bacteria in our bodies interact with us, especially focusing on early life in COPSAC cohort. This research helped me understand more about different types of bacteria and their effects on our health.

Afterward, I moved to Norway and joined the Norwegian University of Life Sciences as a postdoctoral researcher (2021-2024), worked on the "ImprovAFish" project. This project aims to enhance aquaculture sustainability by modulating the feed-microbiome-host axis in fish, showcasing my commitment to impactful research in the field of microbial genomics. Now I moved to Örebro University, Sweden as a full-time researcher, working on EDC-MASLD project.

Research interests

My research interests revolve around exploring microbial diversity through metagenomic sequencing, investigating the impact of host genetics on the gut microbiome, understanding the role of metabolites in human health, conducting comparative genomics studies, and engaging in integrative genomic data analysis.
