Student attitudes to flipped classrooms
A working group focusing on the flipped-classroom pedagogical method has been created within the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Uppsala University, in collaboration with the Centre for Gender Research and the IT Department. In 2019 and 2020, a total of 13 courses have introduced flipped components in a coordinated fashion as a result of the project, creating a unique opportunity to collect valuable data.
This contribution presents preliminary data from an ongoing mixed-method study which includes two focus groups and a quantitative survey. As already observed in the literature, students display mixed attitudes towards flipped classrooms. The aims of our study are to find out which factors determine whether a student is an ”endorser” or a ”resister” of flipped classrooms, as well as to identify which aspects of our flipped-classroom implementation have been successful according to students.

"Practical thinking" and "Come to agreement" in teaching programming
A course in programming is a necessary part of many technical programs in higher education. Programming has however been reported to be difficult to learn. Teachers as well as researchers seem to agree that central to novice students’ learning is their work hands-on in the computer laboratory. The aim of this paper is to make use of theories developed by educational researchers in the pragmatic tradition and to apply those to the domain of novice programming. Concepts from Dewey are combined with thinking from Deleuze and the later Wittgenstein. Two concepts are introduced, “practical thinking” and “come to agreement”. “Practical thinking” relates to writing code, thinking by doing together with the computer environment. “Come to agreement” is a description of when the student has reached a state of balance with the environment. Students’ learning processes can be understood as “come to agreement” and habitual actions when doing programming as “practical thinking”.
