Hazardous waste
What is regarded as hazardous waste is set out in the Waste Ordinance (2020:614), marked with an asterisk(*) in Annex 3. Examples include chemical waste, acids and bases, many heavy metals and transition metals, solvents, paints, adhesives and sealants containing organic solvents, photographic developers and fixer baths, hydraulic oils, petrol, batteries, compact fluorescent lamps and fluorescent lights containing mercury, electronic products containing hazardous components such as mercury switches, glass from cathode-ray tubes and other activated glass. It is important that the waste is stored safely while awaiting final disposal. Containers and receptacles that contain waste should be labeled. Hazardous waste must not be mixed or diluted with other types of hazardous waste, other waste, or other substances or materials. The Schools themselves are responsible for taking care of and disposing of hazardous waste that arises during daily operations and for producing/signing a transport document prior to transport.
Anyone who carries out a professional activity where hazardous waste arises must, for each type of hazardous waste, keep records of the amount of waste that is generated annually, and to whom the waste is left for further handling. The following must also be recorded before a shipment begins:
- where the waste was produced;
- the date of removal;
- transport modes
- who will transport the waste;
- the weight of the waste in kilograms, and
- the consignee and the place where the waste is to be disposed of by means other than transport or tranship by the consignee.
The records must be kept for at least 3 years. The information must also be reported in the waste register on the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency's website. This must be done within two working days of the date on which the waste was recorded. To order plastic boxes, labels, transport and destruction, see the university's procured waste management company or contact; Mio Pettersson / Daniel Duberg (NT), Marie Alkman (HV) or Taher Kermanji (KTC/MV).
