Autoclaves and reactors
An autoclave is a type of pressure cooker in which chemicals, plastics, textiles, glass and metal products can be sterilised. There should be a maintenance manager who is responsible for ensuring that cleaning and checks are carried out in accordance with the instructions for the equipment.
Depending on the chamber size and the relief pressure, autoclaves can be of class A or B. Small tabletop autoclaves do not need to have any classification. Class A and B autoclaves must be inspected by an authorised third-party inspector after installation, and thereafter at prescribed intervals.
Only staff trained in the use of class A or B autoclaves may use these autoclaves. A list of these staff members must be kept at the division/school. Completed cycles, daily supervision, maintenance and service must be recorded in a logbook.
Laboratory reactors are pressurised devices which are also covered by regulation AFS 2017:3. The volume and maximum pressure of the reactor determine whether it comes under class A, B or no class.
