“I’m doing my placement at Epiroc, working in the “Analytics Data Science” department. The department works with machine learning in various ways, mainly through implementing and customising different chatbots. During my placement, I mainly worked on a case about classifying how large drills are used in mines. The idea was to use machine learning models to tackle the case. However, we’ve designed a new approach based on forward kinematics, which means we’ve coded quite a lot in Python to implement our solution.”

What is it like to do your work placement at Epiroc?

“I really enjoy doing my placement at Epiroc. It gives us a lot of hands-on experience while working independently, allowing us to develop key skills. One of the most valuable lessons I learned was communicating with other departments within the company. It feels like a valuable experience because you often work with others who don’t know what machine learning and statistics require. We also learned about software common in the profession, such as Databricks and Power BI. I think this will be useful to have on my CV when applying for jobs.”

What is your dream job?

“One company I’ve always thought would be interesting to work for is Spotify. It’s a company that has access to a lot of data. I find it very exciting how they create clusters for songs and analyse user behaviour.”
