AI, Film and Thinking, 7.5 Credits

In this course, we examine philosophical perspectives on A.I. along with theories on thinking in and through audiovisual media. How does Artificial intelligence (A.I.) – which appears on course to dramatically disrupt key areas of work, politics, and art – affect our conceptions of what it means to be human? Does A.I. “think”, and if so in which senses? Are we overstating some of our predictions of what A.I. will be able to achieve? The course also explores theories on the potential of audiovisual media to advance human thought itself: from early theories on film technology as “machinic intelligence” to more contemporary theories about “film as philosophy”.
