An increase in butyrate and in other short-chain fatty acids along the distal ileum and entire colon, including the more distal parts of the colon (descending colon, rectosigmoid), is considered beneficial. However, assessment of butyrate production and availability is not considered being assessed adequately, as butyrate is very volatile and rapidly absorbed by the intestinal mucosa. Based on established techniques at the Centre for Applied Autonomos Sensor Systems (AASS, Örebro) and an available prototype called ‘Mednose’ we will further develop and miniaturize a compact gas sensor tailor-made for human intestinal application. Initially it will be mounted on existing intestinal tubing and next attached at the mucosa by an “endoscopic clip procedure” with data transmitted to an external data logger. The device will loosen after 1-2 days.
