This research focusses on the neuroscience of human visual cognition, particularly focussing on the dynamics of cognitive decline with ageing. Kick-starting with a SSF (Sweden) funded one-year sabbatical at the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience Berlin (FU Berlin), this line of work will advances the scientific agenda of the CoDesign Lab towards establishing complementary interdisciplinary advances in theoretical, pedagogical, and applied facets of the societally significant milieu of `technology mediated research in human visual cognition and development'.
Within the overarching experimental context of visual cognition and ageing, we address three fundamental impact dimensions: 1) Investigating visual cognition with a challenging but necessary naturalistic, (inter)active approach, instead of a conventional (passive) stimulus-response paradigm; 2) integrating (multimodal) time-sensitive neural and behavioural analyses holistically incorporating the mutually influencing interactions of the brain, body and environment, instead of separating brain and (interactive) behavioural function; and 3) Conception and development of a new class of human-centred, explainable AI mechanisms for (dynamic) multimodal neurocognitive analytics ensuring ethico-legal compliance vis-a-vis emerging AI regulation.
Research outcomes will serve as a novel template for next-generation neurocognitive discovery in visual cognition, and articulating the theory and practice of Responsible Neurocognitive AI.
