During the design, development, production and when a product is in use, a number of data or data streams are generated. These data and data streams can be used to find the root cause of problems that arise during a product's life cycle. Further, collaboration in between partners working with developing products and feedback from customers is addressed. All the above-mentioned data can, when analysed, be used for decision-making, engineering and collaboration.

SMART VORTEX is a technological infrastructure consisting of a suite of interoperable tools, services and methods for intelligent management, validation and analysis, of massive volatile and high frequency (up to 10 GB/sec) data streams.

SMART VORTEX merges sensor data streams from different sensors, combine those with computational algorithm and interpret the data directly in real-time; without the need to store every element of the data stream and do any additional later-on following calculations; which is so called "Sensor Data Fusion".

To calculate sensor data after the recording is one of the typical tasks in the "Big Data" scenarios. In SMART VORTEX we have gone further and used Data Stream computing allowing Data Fusion. The data streams are captured in real time and collaboratively analyzed in SMART VORTEX and have been used for monitoring systems` behavior in a way that enables condition and trend analysis, preventive actions, and adaptive optimization of functional parameters for both: processes and innovation (e.g. design process), and service oriented business model.

The federated architecture supports scalability and ensures distributed or embedded configuration. Mobile devices can be used to control, operate the system on the user dashboard and increase usability

Prototypes have been established to support use cases in four scenarios: design optimization from the machinery, construction equipment, tooling and automotive industries.
