Plastics are produced and used in high volumes globally and due to insufficient waste handling and slow degradation it has become an environmental problem. In this project, microplastic particles less than 5 mm are studied with the aim to understand the hazards associated with plastic pollution, including following objectives:
- Method development of sampling and characterization of microplastics in the environment
- Occurrence and source tracking in fresh waters
- Determination of chemical additives and pollutants associated with microplastics
- New endpoints and methods for ecotoxicological characterisation
