In many schemes for the classification of metal polluted soil the metal content and mobility are two crucial parameters. In some countries these criteria determine what the soil can be used for or if it has to be remediated. In this project we develop a simple empirical characterization procedure that measures the impact of the principal controlling mechanisms on metal mobility and availability. With this approach it is also possible to estimate how long term changes of these parameters will influence metal mobility and availability. It is also possible to elucidate which of the critical parameters that can be used for in situ immobilization of the metals.
