Örebro student in international coding workshop: “Invaluable for my future career”
“The skills we learnt in data analysis, programming and teamwork are directly applicable in many professional roles,” says Joseph Nyajuoga.
Joseph Nyajuoga, student on the Master’s Programme in Statistics at Örebro University, was one of the participants in the EMOS Coding Lab 2024 – a workshop organised by Eurostat with the aim of promoting innovative ways of disseminating official statistics.
“It was a very rewarding experience,” he says.
Over the course of three months, Joseph Nyajuoga teamed up with two other students from universities in Madrid and Belgium. Their task was to work remotely on processing and presenting statistics on quality-of-life indicators and on young people in the digital world within the EU.
Encouraged to participate by his lecturer
It was Joseph Nyajuoga’s lecturer, Stepan Mazur, who is also the EMOS coordinator at Örebro University, who made him aware of the possibility to participate in the EMOS Coding Lab.
“I have a strong interest in programming and wanted to network with students from other universities. Thanks to Stepan’s recommendation, I had the opportunity to apply and was accepted,” he says.
New skills for the future
As the project progressed, Joseph Nyajuoga improved his skills in the programming language R and learnt more about the whole process of working with Eurostat data – from data retrieval to generating visuals and tables.
“I learnt the importance of reproducible research and of contributing to open science. I also learnt a lot about working effectively in a team,” says Joseph Nyajuoga.
He believes the experiences gained from the EMOS Coding Lab will be invaluable for his career:
“The skills we learnt in data analysis, programming and teamwork are directly applicable in many professional roles. I feel well prepared for future challenges in the field,” says Joseph Nyajuoga.
EMOS Coding Lab 2024 is a workshop organised by the EU’s statistics office Eurostat. It gathers master’s students from selected European universities to develop innovative ways of presenting and using statistics.
Örebro University is the only higher education institution in Sweden – and one of only two in the whole Nordic region – to have received the EMOS (European Master in Official Statistics) label. It is a quality label awarded by Eurostat to master’s programmes in statistics that meet specific criteria for official statistics training.
