Academic Writing doctoral course

Academic Writing is a course regularly offered to doctoral students at Örebro University who want to improve their English writing skills. Three credits are awarded for participation in five online sessions together with work done between meetings.

Participants gain knowledge of academic writing in English through analysing and discussing different types of published texts in their fields, by doing writing exercises, and by giving feedback on each other’s texts. The emphasis is on improving individual writing skills and language awareness. You should therefore have a work-in-progress manuscript to work on.

Previous courses have shown that new doctoral students often lack the necessary writing experience to make a contribution to discussions. To benefit most from the course, prospective participants are therefore encouraged to complete at least two semesters of their doctoral programmes before registering for Academic Writing.

The course focuses on structure and coherence in academic writing. Over the five sessions, we will discuss and try out different writing strategies, and you will also give response on drafts written by other participants and receive comments on your own writing. You also need to attend an individual session with the course instructor, during which we will focus specifically on your writing. Recorded material will be made available between sessions, so that we can spend most of our time together on discussions and exercises.

All sessions will take place via Zoom on Friday mornings, 9:00–12:00

31 January, Course introduction
14 February, Academic writing in your field
28 February, Genre analysis
14 March, , First peer feedback round
28 March, Second peer feedback round & course wrap-up

An individual meeting is to be scheduled 3–21 March (approx. 1 hr.)

The course is filled on a first-come, first-served basis, but priority is given to applicants who have completed at least one year of their doctoral studies. A minimum of eight participants are required for the course to be offered.

Application for this spring’s course closes on 17 January 2025.
