Hollywood Subversion: American Film Satire in the 1990s
About this project
Project information
The thesis is concerned with American film satire produced during the 1990s. Through a poetics-based case study approach it considers how the style and form of particular films cue viewers towards constructing satirical meaning, and it also positions the films within the context of contemporary American cinema. The study is partly motivated by a considerable gap in previous research on film satire.
The thesis has resulted in an understanding for how a particular selection of films turns materials circulating in the American culture of the 1990s into satirical experiences for viewers. This means that it draws the contours of a poetics of the contemporary American satirical film.
