"Modern Essay Films as Thought-Maps of Globalization (2015-2018)", individual three-year research project financed by the Swedish Research Council.
About this project
Project information
The project investigated a set of theory-driven essay films and video works, with the aim of fundamentally rethinking the following lingering problem within aesthetic theory: how can political art critically grasp the increasingly vast, intricate, and abstract mechanisms of contemporary capitalism? The project reimagined Fredric Jameson’s notion of “cognitive mapping” primarily through a film-philosophical frame, that is, as a matter of doing theory/philosophy in and through film/video. The project mainly focused on the video artists John Akomfrah, Hito Steyerl, Melanie Gilligan, and artist/filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard.
