The goal of systems biology is to create an understanding of biological systems that is based on an understanding of their parts. We focus on the cellular signal transduction system, which governs how cells perceive and respond to their environment. By collecting molecular level knowledge on the function and interplay of network components, and assembling this knowledge into network models, we enable explanation and prediction of (changes in) network function based on (changes in) molecular function. This research combines two parts: First, collecting, evaluating, and formalising existing empirical knowledge and assembling it into network models. Second, developing the methods required to build and analyse such models of signal transduction at the genome scale.
