The local public sector is responsible for and provides many of the welfare services in Sweden today, though the extent of it has changed over time. The sector is also to a large extent responsible for basic infrastructure such as roads, water and sewerage, much of which was build in the mid-1900s and is today in need of renovation and/or re-investments. The demographic transition towards more young and elderly leads to increased need for more pre-schools, schools, and care which also involves needs for investments where the financing is a challenge for many municipalities. The purpose of the project is part to historically describe local public sector investments, part to use this knowledge to analyze future needs for investments mainly based on demographic variables.
