LGBTQI+ research
The research strand Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression (SOGIE) engages with empirical and theoretical studies of gender and sexual practices among social relations and structures at all levels of society. This research area is transdisciplinary and builds on sociology of gender and sexuality raising issues related to gender relations and practices including family, work, school, intimate relations, and violence.
Our research seeks to tease out variety of knowledge and experiences about people’s gender and sexual embodiment in different geographical, relational, racial, temporal and material contexts. Decolonial and intersectional approach of the research area contributes to the critiques of hegemonic deployment of Western anglophone theorization on gender and sexuality, while it questions homonormative populist discourses on gender and sexual variant people in the West.
