Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown remarkable potential across various domains, but how do they fit into the highly regulated and complex landscape of medicine and health? In this talk, I will briefly overview LLMs, their underlying principles, and their growing role in processing and interpreting textual data. Following this overview, I will then present a previous pilot project where we leveraged LLMs to create embeddings directly from structured medical health records, thereby bypassing traditional preprocessing methods. Lastly, I will introduce a newly granted project aiming to utilize LLMs to address one of healthcare’s enduring challenges: structuring unstructured health data, such as free-text notes, to enhance accessibility and utility. This talk will explore the prospects and limitations of LLMs in transforming medical data workflows, offering insights into their potential to improve efficiency and decision-making in healthcare.
