About Yiren Zhao
Yiren Zhao is a doctoral candidate in musicology. She is affiliated with the research projects Music and Human Bejings and ACCLAIM (Aesthetic, Culture and Media). The topic of her dissertation is Shaping the Meaning of Chinese Music Subcultures. In this research, she aims to figure out what are the meanings attached to music subcultures, such as metal, rap, rock, and punk, in the Chinese context and how are these shaped? As conclusions, she proposes the contextual, individual and musical meanings of Chinese music subcultures in Beijing.
