About Thomas Denk
Thomas Denk has worked at Örebro University as professor of political science since 2015. Before he has worked at Åbo Akademi University, Karlstad University, and Mid Sweden University. He was serving as the dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences during the period 2019-2022.
Research
His research focuses on three areas. The first focus concerns how the creation of new states and how these processes of state formation affect the conditions for democratization. An ongoing project aims to create a database on state formation and democratization during 1815-2020, which develops an existing database. The second focus is on how political developments in countries spread and affects developments in other countries. One project develops a database to examine how developments of democratic institutions spread between countries. In the third area concerns the political orientations of citizens (political culture). For example, the attitudes toward automatized decision-making in the public sector and how citizens become aware of politics.
He has published several books on state formation, democratization, political culture and comparative methodology.
Teaching
Thomas Denk teaches courses in comparative politics and research methods and supervises PhD students. He is the secondary supervior for two PhD students. He has been main supervisor for five PhD students and secondary supervisor for five PhD students.
