About Maria Åström

Maria Åström is a hematologist working as Senior Consultant at the Department of Medicine, Örebro University Hospital, and an affiliated researcher at the Faculty of Medicine and Haelth, Örebro University. She defended her thesis on prognostic factors in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in 2003 at Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm. She was co-supervisor of Piotr Kozlowski who defended his thesis on populationbased studies of acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) in 2016 at Örebro University.

Her present research originally builds on the observation that patients with the rare disease X-linked thrombocytopenia with thalassemia (XLTT) show certain clinical, functional, morphological and molecular similarities with the malignant disease primary myelofibrosis (PMF). Research questions on disease mechanisms can thereby be elucidated by comparisons between the disorders.  PMF belongs to the disease group Philadelphia-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN) together with polycythemia vera (PV) end essential thrombocythemia (ET), which are also studied. The research aims at increased understanding of aspects of platelet function, mechanisms of bone marrow fibrosis and tumor development. Proteomics and transcriptomics are performed on cell types from blood and bone marrow, and the omicsdata is processed by bioinformatic tools.

Maria is involved in the Medical Programme at Örebro University as seminar supervisor for master degree projects. She contributes in national and international collaborations on MPN and related diseases.
