About Johan Schnürer
Professor Johan Schnürer (born 1957) is the Vice-Chancellor of Örebro University since 1 July 2016. He was pro-vice-chancellor for collaboration at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in Uppsala 2010-2016 and before that he was head of the Department of Microbiology at SLU 1996-2010.
Johan Schnürer's undergraduate studies included chemistry, cell biology and microbiology at Uppsala University. He received his PhD at SLU in 1985 with his thesis on fungi in arable soil and their role in carbon and nitrogen cycling. He became docent in 1988, senior lecturer in 1993 and since 2000, he is professor of microbiology at SLU.
Johan Schnürer's research has focused on food-borne micro-fungi and their interaction with lactic acid bacteria and propionic acid bacteria. He has published over 110 international refereed primary publications and peer-reviewed articles, has been the supervisor of a dozen completed doctoral projects and the external reviewer on a dozen occasions in Denmark, the Netherlands and Ireland. He has many years of teaching experience, being a course director for over 10 years of advanced courses in food and feed microbiology and of Nordic and Swedish doctoral courses in microbiology.
Johan Schnürer is the initiator and programme director of several major research programmes in microbial biotechnology and environmental technology, receiving funding from among others Mistra and the biotechnology industry. He is the owner of several patents, and has seen one of the innovations from his research group become a biological conservation product, which is currently available in 20 countries. He is presently a board member of a researcher-owned IPR company managing intellectual property rights issues surrounding research, commercialisation and patents. He is also chairman of a research company seeking new antibiotics.
Johan Schnürer is an elected member of the Royal Society of Sciences at Uppsala (2008) and the Royal Swedish Academy of Agriculture and Forestry (2012).
