About Ida Melander

Ida Melander is Senior Lecturer in Swedish language. Her research interests include meaning-making in digital settings, discourse analysis, narrative analysis and health communication.

Ida completed her PhD in 2022. Her thesis explores health communication about the chronic disease endometriosis in three patient-oriented, alternative and new settings: knowledge negotiations in online discussion forums, seeking care through so-called ‘self-referrals’, and multimodal illness narratives.

She is currently working on three different projects. The first project investigates digital pens in writing instruction (in collaboration with Anders Björkvall from Örebro University and Fredrik Lindstrand from Konstfack). The second project is a study of news aimed at young people on TikTok. The overall purpose of the study is to describe the news genre and Swedish news reporting on TikTok, and to critically examine the news that is published there. The third project is a continuation of one of the dissertation's sub-studies, dealing with self-referrals. This follow-up project will complement the patient perspective taken in the thesis by including how doctors assess these referral texts.
