About Christian Svarfvar
Teaching Violin and Chamber music.
Christian Svarfvar is an internationally acclaimed violinist, celebrated for his artistry, versatility, and emotional depth. Recognized as one of Scandinavia's most accomplished musicians, he has performed with leading orchestras worldwide and recorded several critically acclaimed albums, including three with the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
Christian has given solo concerts at renowned venues such as Carnegie Hall, Musikverein, Concertgebouw, Kölner Philharmonie, and Cité de la Musique. Critics praise his playing as “fearless” and “mesmeric,” with a tone that “gleams” (Gramophone, Financial Times).
Born into a musical family, Christian began his training under the guidance of his father, Sven-Ole Svarfvar. At 12, he made his solo debut performing Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto with the Swedish Chamber Orchestra.
He came to wide national attention following his jubilant debut with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, performing Carl Nielsen’s Violin Concerto under maestro Hannu Lintu, while completing his studies at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. He then went on to study at the Juilliard School in New York under the tutelage of Robert Mann, further refining his craft and deepening his artistry.
Christian gained international recognition when he was appointed a “Rising Star” by the European Concert Hall Organization (ECHO), which led to performances at iconic venues such as the Musikverein and Bozar. His debut recital at Carnegie Hall as part of the Distinctive Debuts series further solidified his reputation.
As a chamber musician, Christian has collaborated with renowned artists such as Janine Jansen, Julian Rachlin, Clemens Hagen, Tabea Zimmermann, and Martin Fröst.
A notable highlight includes his premiere of Howard Shore’s Eastern Promises Violin Concerto with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, conducted by the Oscar-winning composer himself.
Christian’s extensive discography showcases his artistic range and versatility. Highlights include The Symphonic Touch of Benny Andersson, a symphonic reimagining of compositions by Benny Andersson, and Infinite Bach, a reinterpretation of J.S. Bach’s Violin Concertos, recorded with the London Philharmonic Orchestra at Abbey Road Studios. Both projects received critical acclaim, with Infinite Bach achieving millions of streams internationally.
He has also recorded Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 with the London Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Joana Carneiro, a performance praised for its depth and emotional intensity. Additionally, his album Après un Rêve with pianist Roland Pöntinen, featuring works by Fauré, Debussy, and Ravel, was lauded for its nuanced interpretations and lyrical beauty.
With a commitment to redefining classical music’s role in modern culture, Christian continues to inspire audiences through innovative projects and groundbreaking collaborations.
Christian plays on a Sanctus Seraphin 1736 violin, generously on extended loan from the Järnåker Foundation.
