Postdoctoral researcher in Biomedicine
Ref no: ORU 2.1.1-08624/2024
We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher in Biomedicine for a fixed-term position at the School of Medical Science.
Subject area
The subject area for this position is Biomedicine.
Background
The postdoc position is part of a recently granted 3-year EU project on probiotic treatment of hyperuricaemia, with an individual perspective considering specific probiotic mechanisms, genetics, and gut metabolic activity. The project is in close collaboration with the University of Copenhagen, Leiden University Medical Centre, and industrial partners from Denmark and France.
The position will be located at the School of Medical Sciences (MV) within Örebro University, a modern and expanding university with approximately 1,600 employees and 17,000 students, known for its prominent research activities. MV also hosts the university's medical program and contains several strong research centers primarily focused on inflammation, metabolism, and nutrition.
The position will be part of the interdisciplinary research centre Responsive Nutrition (Rosetta@oru) which is a central part of Örebro University's strategic knowledge profile in Food & Health. The Responsive Nutrition research centre focuses on internationally leading validated methods and models to assess the benefits of food and dietary supplements for gut, metabolic, and mental health, and to determine who benefits from specific dietary changes throughout the lifespan.
Duties and responsibilities
The appointment as a postdoctoral researcher is intended to enable persons who have recently been awarded their doctoral degree to consolidate and develop primarily their research skills.
The postdoctoral researcher will be involved in planning, conducting and analysing results of two nutritional intervention studies and one ex vivo study (faecal fermentation). Important tasks include recruitment of hyperuricaemic and healthy study participants, planning and conducting screening and follow-up study visits, handling the collection of biological samples, being involved in the laboratory analyses of the biological samples, statistical analyses and publication of the results. The position also involves writing ethical applications and supervising students involved in the project.
Qualifications
Those qualified for appointment as a postdoctoral researcher are applicants who at the time of appointment hold a doctoral degree or have a degree from abroad deemed to correspond to a doctoral degree. Applicants with doctoral degrees that have been awarded no more than 3 years prior to the application deadline are to be considered first. The applicant may not previously have held a position as a postdoctoral researcher for more than one year in the same subject and at the same higher education institution. The position is for a term of at least 2 years initially but may be extended for a further 1 year. If the person during the period of employment has been on parental leave, the period of employment is to be extended by the corresponding number of days. The period of employment may also be extended in the event of absence due to illness.
Assessment criteria
We are looking for candidates with a (bio)medical (or related) background. The position requires a high level of independence and organisational skills, as well as excellent English language communication and writing skills. As the position requires both written and oral communication with Swedish study participants, knowledge of Swedish will be of advantage. Previous experience with clinical and/or nutritional studies and practical experience with laboratory work will also be of advantage.
The applicant should be able to demonstrate the personal qualities required to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities at hand, the ability to cooperate with other members of staff, and the ability to contribute to the development of the operations.
Particular attention is to be paid to the applicant’s prospects of contributing to the future development of both research and education. Importance is also attached to a demonstrated ability and ambition to embark on a career within academia. In addition, the applicant’s ability to disseminate information and communicate; collaborate and engage with the wider community; and facilitate utilisation of the university’s research will be part of the assessment.
