A sexologist who laid the foundation for his career on the Social Work Programme at Örebro University. Here, he found his inner peace and ability to speak on topics many shy away from – sex and relationships. Kalle Norwald cherishes popular education and hopes to create a culture where we have the courage to speak openly about sex, whether we are having it or not.

Profession: Social Worker, Licensed Psychotherapist and Sexologist

Studied: Social Work, 2005–2009

Stockholm-native Kalle Norwald chose Örebro University because he had heard great things about the town and student life – and because the Social Work Programme in Örebro had the best reputation.

“My time at Örebro University was amazing. Some go to Southeast Asia to find themselves – I went to Örebro. It was here I really grew up. I recall the introduction and the first weeks at the university – the focus was on relationships, picnics, movies, and having a good time – without drinking and making a fool of yourself. We were a great mix of people from all over the country. It was amazing!” says Kalle.

Studying social work provided Kalle Norwald with a solid foundation, and he says that it was here he learned everything about the importance of source criticism and research-based practice. He emphasises that having an opinion is one thing – making your case with facts based on research lends credibility on another level.

“Beyond mastering the craft of being a social worker, we also gained a sense of humility and the realisation that we’ll never be fully learned. Daunting as it may sound, embracing that and not letting it hold you back can also be a reassurance.”

Even as a student, Kalle knew he wanted to work with sexual health. He followed up with a master’s degree in sexology in Malmö and later trained as a psychotherapist.

“I’ve always been drawn to topics others only whisper about and find a bit embarrassing. I want to help foster a different culture.”

Today, his professional life rests on three pillars: psychotherapy, education, and public outreach. He gives lectures and teaches courses for professionals across the country and contributes to newspaper columns and appears on morning TV to reach a broader audience. He was an expert for five seasons of Sweden’s Married at first sight and recently released his third book in Swedish, this one dealing with adult sex education and things like being horny, feeling lust and giving consent.

“I want to show that sex doesn’t have to be such a big deal. Whether we choose to have it or not, it’s a part of our lives. Learning more and having the courage to talk about sex boosts self-esteem. I believe it could also make us more likely to both give and seek consent, which might help reduce sexual assault. We need to learn to speak openly about what matters to us – such as sexual desire and a passion for life.”

How does it feel to be honoured as an alumnus on Örebro University’s Wall of Inspiration?

“Insane! It’s cooler than having your portrait at Arlanda Airport. This is where my career as a social worker and sexologist began. So, it’s humbling to be part of this display – a huge honour that fills me with gratitude,” ends Kalle Norwald.
