When she first walked through the doors of Örebro University, it was to become a forensic scientist and solve crimes like on TV. Three years later, she graduated as an environmental chemist firmly committed to sustainability. Johanna Gillberg is an entrepreneur driven by her passion for creating companies, seeing people thrive at work – and helping industry leave a greener footprint.

Profession: Chemist and Entrepreneur

Studied: Chemistry, Analytical Science and Forensics, 2019–2022

Johanna Gillberg chose to study analytical chemistry and forensics at Örebro University to fulfil her dream of working as a forensic scientist.

“I’ve always liked chemistry and was fascinated by forensic scientists in TV series. Örebro is the only university offering a specialisation in forensics, so that’s what brought me here,” she explains.

She liked both the town and the university. During her studies, pure chemistry and environmental chemistry caught her interest. So Örebro turned out to be a stroke of luck for her.

“We had many opportunities to learn more about a lot of things, for instance, by working as an assistant or participating in research projects. During my degree project, things really clicked, and I began to understand what a chemist actually does. I discovered that working with environmental forensics and pure analytical techniques is incredibly exciting.”

Örebro University has strong research in environmental chemistry, including on PFAS and other environmental toxins, which also impacts teaching. When Johanna Gillberg entered the job market, she realised that her advanced knowledge made a difference.

“There’s a gap between legislation, industry knowledge, and the research we studied at the university. As a recent graduate, feeling that I had the most up-to-date knowledge really boosted my confidence,” she says.

While still a student, Johanna Gillberg got in touch with Örebro University’s Innovation Office. She started a company and was awarded a scholarship for her entrepreneurship. Thanks to that recognition, she connected with her business partner, Jonatan Persson.

Their company, Helios Innovations, has developed a technology to purify industrial wastewater from hazardous chemicals like PFAS. They have received numerous awards for their business innovation – and are featured on several lists of notable companies. One is Forbes magazine’s Europe list of the 30 most successful people under 30.

“I wouldn’t be where I am today had I not studied at Örebro. There aren’t many three-year programmes that make that sort of impact. Being a chemist is a big part of my identity,” she says.

Their company is now aiming for international expansion. Being an entrepreneur, Johanna Gillberg has found an outlet for her creative drive.

“It’s incredibly rewarding to create companies and start-up teams. And it’s wonderful to see when people look forward to coming to work. Still, the environment is our higher calling. We want to contribute to a green impact on an industry that’s still very dirty – and offer a better alternative than what’s currently available.”

How does it feel to be honoured as an alumnus on Örebro University’s Wall of Inspiration?

“It’s fantastic! While I was still a student, we once hung out and took selfies by the Wall of Inspiration after a night at the Student Union. So I know it well! It’s a true honour to be selected. Of all my awards and recognitions, this one definitely comes out on top,” says Johanna Gillberg.
