Hockey player, coach and sports manager. Henrik Löwdahl has dedicated his career to Örebro Hockey and has had his jersey number 15 retired and raised to the rafters of Behrn Arena. The teacher programme at Örebro University equipped him with valuable tools and the confidence to lead with clarity and warmth. Now, the goal is to take Örebro Hockey to the top – their eyes are on winning the Swedish Championship trophy.
Profession: Sports Manager at Örebro Hockey
Studied: Primary Education, 2004–2009
Henrik Löwdahl is renowned for his long and successful ice hockey career and is the Sports Manager for Örebro Hockey. He enrolled in the Primary Education Programme at Örebro University because he enjoys a school environment and likes working with young people.
“I really felt the teacher programme was wonderful, but at times quite intense. We had our first baby while I was studying. Still, I think it worked out well, balancing family life and studies with my career as a player for Örebro Hockey. Though, I probably missed a lot of fun parties,” says Henrik.
A couple of years after graduating, when Örebro Hockey advanced to the top league in Sweden, he dedicated himself to a full-time hockey career. For 18 seasons, Henrik Löwdahl stayed loyal to Örebro Hockey, from Division 1 through Allsvenskan and up to the SHL. In his last nine years, he was the team captain.
Henrik Löwdahl’s record of over 600 points is unmatched in Örebro Hockey history. Upon retiring as a player, he was honoured by having his jersey number 15 raised to the rafters of Behrn Arena.
He then began his training career as a junior coach, where he initiated the club’s collaboration with regional schools. He also served as the club’s development manager, contributing to the success of the junior teams and Örebro Hockey’s promotion to the SHL.
Since spring 2024, Henrik Löwdahl has been the club’s Sports Manager. Although he is not in a school setting, he says he applies his teacher training nearly every day.
“My training as a teacher has been instrumental to me in my leadership role. In addition to a new perspective and understanding, the pedagogical training provides confidence when working with young people chasing their dreams. They need a firm but supportive hand to help them find the right path forward through their successes and setbacks. And here, my training as a teacher has been invaluable,” he says.
Of course, the ultimate goal for Henrik Löwdahl is to lead his Örebro Hockey to a Swedish Championship win.
“Being at the top is our vision. We’ll face challenges and setbacks, but that’s the goal we’re aiming for – whether in one, two, or five years’ time. I want to build an organisation that’s sustainable in the long term, all the while taking steady steps forward.”
How does it feel to be honoured as an alumnus on Örebro University’s Wall of Inspiration?
“It feels awesome! It’s a little surreal and surprising, but it’s such a great feeling. And truly an honour,” says Henrik Löwdahl.
